Wind loading and wind barriers
One of the sections of the highway connecting the cities Zagreb and Split is 25 kilometers long. This is the section running between the Tunnel Sveti Rok to the Maslenica Interchange. It passes through rough relief where the Velebit Mountain and the Adriatic coast meet. This is actually the main reason for the strong wind genesis. The strongest wind, the north-eastern wind, known as bora, can reach up to 69, 0 m/s. It is a turbulent and quite unpredictable wind because of its gusty nature. Bora directly influences the highway service efficiency because it can cause vehicle instability and overturning. This is unacceptable from the traffic safety and cost efficiency point of view, i.e. losses caused by having to close the highway section for traffic during bora. This paper will outline some issues of the complex project of wind protection along this highway section.
