In search for the appropriate regional development model in Croatia
The European Union (EU) is one of the largest and economically strongest regions in the world. However, it suffers from the uneven regional development and therefore the EU is constantly trying to bring together different national traditions in the planning and management of the regional development in search for the appropriate sustainable regional development model. After years of providing financial aid to the less developed and peripheral regions, today polycentrism is seen as a tool for the promotion of the more balanced territorial development. Perceived differently from the macro, meso and micro perspective, in this paper we are testing to what extent polycentrism can be applied on the micro (national level) in the Croatia. We are analysing current urban development model based on the four growth poles and confronting it to the potentials for implementation of the polycenticity model through the calculation of the polycentricity index. Results of our analysis indicate to what extent Croatia is perceptive for the polycentric development model and should serve Croatia’ s policy-makers as an analytical background in the future planning of regional and urban development.
