Terminal ballistics of high-velocity projectiles in gelatin blocs
Aim of our research was to produce a gunshot wound whose mechanism and charachteristics can be monitored, measured, recorded and reproduced. We used Russian AK-74 assault rifle with 5.45mmx30 projectiles that were fired into the tissue simulant - gelatin blocks. Projectile velocity and pressure in the gelatin blocks were measured and projectile track was visualized by ultra-speed camera and computed tomography. Results of nine experiments were analyzed. Analysis of CT images shows that significant destruction is found approximately 10 cm from entry point of the bullet and that two zones of damage are visible: the residual cavity and a zone of damaged gelatin whichwe interpreted as a residue of the temporary catity. The size of evident destruction is far greater than the cross sectional area of the bullet. The projectiles we used do not deform or fragment and their path is unstable. Further development of the described methods will enable us to analyze and compare the effects of various firearms and types of ammunition. The results of the research are important for surgeons who terat these injuries annnd for forensic experts as well as from the international and legal standpoints because of the legality of individual types of ammunition.
