Stability of triclabendazole in baits under different conditions

In order to treat and control large American liver fluke (Fascioloides magna) in free ranging red deer population, oral treatments with various trematocides, bait mixtures and exposure strategy were used with diverse efficacy. Suitability of basic mixture as holder for applied trematocide, its attractivity and consumability is a key factor for successful treatment. In order to find out basic mixture that is most suitable for handling and distribution to red deer (Cervus elaphus L.) nine (9) different mixtures were tested. Mixtures stability were tested after addition of triclabendazole (TCB) (Fasinex® ; 10%, Novartis, Switzerland) for preservation of original consistency, color, smell and taste in laboratory and open area conditions. Five (5) out of nine (9) mixtures proved to be acceptable for storage under different conditions. Those mixtures underwent additional examination on TCB concentration/stability according to time and conditions of exposure. TCB identification and quantification was performed by liquid chromatography determination (Agilent 1100). Results pointed out mixture with 7.6 % TCB concentration 28 days after preparation and exposure on feeding spot. With this concentration, 75 g of bait contains sufficient amount of TCB for treatment of 100 kg red deer (dose is 60 mg/kg b.w.). During the March and April 2007 this mixture was used to prepare TCB baits for treatment of over 2300 free-ranging red deer on total surface of 73 845 ha in five hunting grounds in Slavonija and Baranja region.
