Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita in a male mouflon (Ovis ammon musimon) lamb

During the March 2007, few days old male mouflon (Ovis ammon musimon) lamb was found within the fenced area for fallow deer (Dama dama) and mouflon rearing, managed by the Game Management Centre Rozhanovce, University of Veterinary Medicine Košice. Due to the severe limb malformations and consequent inability to stand up, lamb was caught and euthanasied. Following the euthanasia procedure lamb was subjected to macroscopic and x-ray examination, necropsy procedure and histopathological examination. Observed multiple alterations were classified as arthrogryphosis, scoliosis and reduced length of the left hind limb. Arthrogryphosis is a term for constant contraction of joint/s found throughout the body at birth. It is generally associated to fetal akinesia due to different fetal abnormalities or maternal disorders. It can also be related to damages of the central nervous system (i.e. intrauterine infection with Akabane or bluetongue virus), ingestion of poisonous plants by pregnant ewe, fetal inactivity or other anomalies such as scoliosis, torticollis or cleft palate. Combination of observed alterations along with nonspecific results of histopathology and the fact that this was a single case, excludes infectious agent as a cause of this condition.
