Contributo alla tipologia dei campanili romanici in Istria
This article covers different types of belfries constructed in Istria during the Romanesque period. The belfry mounted on the axis of the facade is discussed and its development analyzed from pre-Romanesque roots. Along with the free-standing belfry-campanile and belfry propped against the flank or facade of the church, there is also the belfry over the shrine, as exemplified by St. George's church between Završje and Grožnjan, which is the southermost example of this particular type of belfry in Europe. The article attempt to explain its orgin by referring to early constructions of this type located and studied in the neighbouring regions.
