Middle Eocene Planktonic Foraminifera from Flysch Basin of Istria-Croatia
A detailed study based on planktonic foraminifera has been carried out on three sections (total thickness 626 m) in the Flysch Basin of Istria region Croatia. Two sections BUZET-1 and ŠTERNA-1 are characterized by continuous sedimentation and are constitued mainly of massive marls, turbidites and foraminiferal limestones of Middle Eocene age. The third section PAZIN-1 is characterized in the lower part by the boundary between Cenomanian/Middle Eocene limestones and massive marls in the upper part of the section. Based on the distribution of the planktonic foraminifera four planktonic foraminiferal zones may be distinguished: Globigerinatheka subconglobata (P-11), Morozovella lehneri (P-12), Orbulinoides beckmanni (P-13) and Truncorotaloides rohri (P-14). Planktonic foraminifera are well developed and are of normal size with the exception of the number and size reduction near the P-13/P-14 boundary. Characteristic tropical forms are absent and planktonic foraminifera show tipical warm-temperature wather forms.
