Importance of Wind Measurement Period for the Wind Energy Potential Estimation
Since the available wind power density is proportional to the mean cube of the wind speed, the correctly measured and averaged wind speed is of significant importance for the given purposes. The paper discussed, the importance of the wind measurement period length for the wind power estimation. The deviations of particular mean monthly and annual wind speed from the mean values for the period 1981-1990 are analysed eight stations along the Adriatic coast and islands. The climatological representatives of the wind regime improve when the measurement period is extended. If we use the wind measurements from a short "windy" period, the wind energy potential might be overestimated compared to the real climatological long-term wind energy potential.
