Nocturnal urinary melatonin levels and urine biochemistry in microwave-irradiated rats

The aim of this preliminary study was to see whether 2.45 GHz microwave exposure has evident effects on rats&#8217; urinary 6-hydroxy-melatonin sulfate (aMT6s) excretion and urinalysis parameters after whole-body irradiation for two hours a day, five days a week, fifteen days in total. The average specific absorption rate (SAR) was calculated to be 1.25 (&#61617; 0.36 SE) W/kg. To collect nocturnal urine, animals were held individually in metabolic cages every night, from 7:00 PM till 7:00 AM next day. The concentration of aMT6s in urine samples was determined by direct radioimmunoassay kit (Stockgrand Ltd., Guildford, UK). Urinary glucose, bilirubin, ketones, specific gravity, blood, pH, protein, urobilinogen, nitrite and leukocyte appearance were taken using multiple reagent strips (N-Multistix&#174; Bayer Diagnostic, UK). In comparison to the unexposed control group, no significant changes in body temperature and food or water were observed in the exposed animals. A significant decline in aMT6s in microwave exposed rats was observed between experimental days eight and eleven (p<0.05). The level of aMT6s remained low until the end of the experiment, but not significantly in relation to the control values. The results of urinary pH, glucose, bilirubin, ketones, specific gravity, blood, protein, urobilinogen, nitrite, and leukocytes indicated no significant differences between the exposed and control animals. In conclusion, it is likely that the applied 2.45 microwave field has the capacity to affect melatonin balance in rats after repeated exposure.
