RECENT STATUS OF LABRIDAE FAMILY SPECIES IN THE ADRIATIC SEA

According to recent literature, check-list of Adriatic Labridae family species includes eight genera and eighteen species. The most abundant and widespread are species of genera Coris (C. julis) and Symphodus, particularly S. ocellatus, S. cinereus, S. mediterraneus, S. rostratus and S. tinca. S. melanocercus and S. roissali are not regarded as numerous, while S. doderleini is a fairly rare species for the Adriatic Sea, distributed only in its middle and south part. Population density and distribution of all these species depend on sea-grass meadows (Posidonia, Zostera, Cymodocea) which are generally in decline or have already disappeared in some areas. In addition, as a result of intensive fishing activity (trammel bottom nets, gillnets, speargun fishing) abundance of Labrus merula, L. bimaculatus and particularly L. viridis have drastically declined over the last thirty years. The presence of Ctenolabrus rupestris and Symphodus melops in the Adriatic Sea is questionable since in more than hundred years there were no confirmed records. Underwater photographs taken in 2005 in the area of island Sušac (middle Adriatic) represent the first confirmed record of Lapanella fasciata. Recent presence of this species in the Adriatic could be due to global warming. Likewise, the distribution expansion from south all the way to north Adriatic and an increase in abundance of Thalassoma pavo are attributed to global warming. Xyrichthys novacula is a rare species. In the last thirty years it has been recorded with certainty only several times, mainly in south Adriatic. Acantholabrus palloni has a deeper depth range than rest of the Adriatic labrids and can be found as deep as 300 m. It is more common in the south and middle part ot the Adriatic. Five species of Labridae family are cited in the Red list of Croatian marine fishes: Labrus viridis as endangered (EN) species, L. merula and L. bimaculatus as vulnerable (VU), Symphodus tinca in the least concern (LC) and S. doderleini in data deficient (DD) categories.
