Local dimensions of sustainable development: The case of Croatia
Sustainable development is a dynamic concept with many dimensions and numerous interpretations. It can be viewed as a goal and as development process. In this paper, we are going to combine both of these dimensions by identifying sustainability goals and analyzing capacities to achieve these goals on local level. The aim of this paper is to present a picture of sustainable communities as a benchmark of sustainability at the local level in Croatia. Therefore, we are going to explore more in detail the challenges local communities face in their mission to become more sustainable. The aim of this paper is to elaborate features of successful urban sustainable development policy, as well as to identify factors that promote or hinder sustainable development policy. Research will be predominantly focus on governing and financial issues while our starting point is that good governance is a precondition for achieving sustainable development, especially at the local level. We will conclude this paper with several proposals for further research of this important issue.
