Distributed multimedia learning with open SMIL indexing system

The usage of SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) format as a solution for delivering e-learning content is proposed. Distributed multi-user Web application for indexing SMIL presentations is described. Presentations, located on remote servers, are fetched using different protocols, analysed according to their temporal characteristics and indexed using the full-text search method. To offer students only the desired set of knowledge in a specific course, content can be grouped in different personalised search boxes. Such search boxes are easily placed on any course Web page and communicate with the search engine through client-side technologies only, thus eliminating the need to tweak learning systems and use the server-side programming.
