Time Course of Psychological Adaptation and Development of Psychological Disturbances in Refugees and Displaced Persons
This paper is based on our field experience and presents the importance of time in the assessment of psychological reactions of displaced persons and refugees. The development of psychological reactions in exile occurred in three basic phases: 1)preoccupation with survival problems, 2)passivity and withdrawal, and 3) differentiation of refugees/displaced persons into a larger group without major disturbances and a smaller group with pronounced psychological disturbances. The recognition of the phases was of practical importance for our work because it helped us select the approopriate model of intervention. In the first phase, psycho-social support was essential; in the second phase it was important to screen for persons at risk of developing serious psychological disturbances. In the third phase, our main effort was diagnosis and therapy for those with psychological disturbances.
