Grid based 3D rendering
Photorealistic rendering is a computationally very expensive task, where certain images can take several days or entire weeks even to be rendered on the most powerful commodity hardware. Worst even, more often than not, it is image sequences (videos) that are sought after, and thus the total render time climbs up to astronomical levels. To further complicate things, it is not uncommon for certain users within the scientific community to require a substantial level of interactivity in visualization of an abstract environment, thus necessitating almost real-time rendering speeds. The only way to tackle this immense computational problem is via distributed computing. Luckily, global illumination algorithms are known for their embarrassingly parallelizable nature which makes them ideal for distributed computing implementation.
