A serum-free mammalian embryo culture : a possible model for embryo-(neuro- toxicity testing)

We have developed a postimplantation rat embryo culture model in a simple serum-free chemically defined medium which we have used primarily to investigate the influence of biologicaly active substances upon growth and differentiation. As our in vitro results showed essentially the same effect on the differentiation of neural tissue as our in vivo results (grafts of cultivated embryos) we deduced that our in vitro three-dymensional model system in chemically defined medium can probably be used as an alternative to in vivo experiments for embryotoxicity and especially neurotoxicity-testing during the most critical period of mammalian embryonic development.
