Transferrin supports differentiation of neural tissue in grafts of early rat embryos pre-cultivated in serum-free medium.

Early postimplantation rat embryos cultured in vitro in an organ culture system and in serum-free medium displayed poor growth and differentiation. Addition of iron-supplemented holotransferrin to the medium enhances the differentiation of neuroblasts and lentoids.The initial restriction of developmental capacity of serum-free cultured early rat embryos is reversible by subsequent transplantation ; in this system the iron-free transferrin enhances differentiation of neural tissues and lentoids.
