Analysis of Structure and Corrosion Behaviour of Ternary Titanium Alloys with Cobalt and Chromium
High strength, low density, excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility are the main properties that make titanium attractive for a variety of applications. Some other properties of titanium can be improved by alloying with elements such as Co, Cr, Nb, Al, V. In this work addition of different atomic percentages of cobalt and chromium on the structure and corrosion behaviour of titanium was investigated. For this purpose 6 samples of as-cast Ti-Co-Cr alloys were prepared by melting the pure elements in a laboratory arc-furnace. The phases of investigated samples were characterized by using a Philips PW3710 X-ray diffraction (XRD) facility with CuK radiation. In order to evaluate corrosion resistance of alloys method of cyclic potentiodynamic anodic polarization was performed in deareated 0, 9 % NaCl solution at the room temperature. From the obtained pitting potential Epitt can be seen that all investigated alloys have very good corrosion characteristics due to relatively high titanium content.
