Efficiency of pozzolans in Portland cement composits
Pozzolanic materials have long been used as active additions in Portland cement concrete. Among these supplementary cementing materials (SCMs), the industrial wastes produced during various thermal treatments (silica fume, blast-furnace slag and fly ashes) are mainly used to improve the mechanical properties and durability of concrete. In present work, a practical approach to the effect of the SCMs ( the silica fume (SF) and the Class F fly ash (FA) from the Croatian plants) on the compressive strength of Portland cement, type CEM IIA-S 42.5N, is presented using the concept of the SCM factor. The results showed that the calculated efficiency factor (or k-value) varied with pozzolan type, replacement level and age. Generally, the k-values decreased with higher replacement level of the SCMs, but increased with age. The k-values calculated herein are in good agreement with literature data.
