Effect of pesticidal chlorinated hydrocarbons on the enzymatic regulation of carbohydrate metabolism in poultry. II. Gluconeogenic response of insecticide-treated chicks to stress.

The objective of this study was to determine wether and how the treatment of two week old Nick chicks, treated from first day of life with sublethal amounts of chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides in food and exposed to sublethal heat or starvation stress, changes the common physiological response of key liver gluconeogenic enzymes activities (PC, PEPCK, FDPase, G6Pase), pyruvate and glucose levels. It was established that chlordane, toxaphene, kelevan and lindane inhibit gluconeogenic response to heat stress. DDT, endosulfan and aldrine deranged it and toxaphene, lindane and aldrine inhibit this response, when the chicks are exposed to starvation stress. It means that chlorinated hydrocarbon insecticides in food inhibit or disturb the biochemical adaptation of chicks to stress.
