Comparison of river discharge measurements by conventional current meter and acoustic Doppler current profiler
The discharge measurements carried out on River Sava and River Mura by using both conventional current meter method and the ADCP are presented in the paper. The results of these measurements, the first of that kind carried out in Croatia, highlight comparative advantages of the ADCP measurement over current meter method. The ADCP discharge measurements were carried out by the DHMZ, while the current meter measurements were carried out by both DHMZ and HNVI. The discharge measured at the same stage using current meter and ADCP differ by the order of magnitude of 2%. Consistency of the discharges measured by ADCP was further confirmed by additional discharge measurements carried out on River Sava at slightly higher water level, where corresponding increase in measured discharge was recorded. The conducted measurements indicate that the ADCP used for measurements presents a significant advancement as regards the measurement accuracy, repeatability, duration, flexibility and operability.
