Lymphocyte subpopulations in the blood, spleeen and thymus of malformed fetuses
Lymphocyte subpopulation levels for a total T lymphocyte count (CD2), helper T lymphocytes (CD4), suppressor T lymphocytes (CD8) and total B lymphocytes (CD20) were determined using monoclonal antibodies in the venous blood, spleen and thymus of 20 malformed fetuses aged 18-28 weeks, The result were read off a flow cytometer and expressed as the mean percentages +/- standard deviation. All malformed fetuses had mature lymphocyte cells. In the thymus of malformed fetuses a significantly lower number of CD4 and CD8 subpopulation of lymphocytes was found. Significantly higher number of CD8 lymphocytes was found in the fetal blood.
