Effect of boronising on erosion corrosion of mild steel
The influence of boronising oin erosion corrosion of mild steel in NaCl/SiO2.suspension has been investigated. Boronising was parformed in a solid mixture for 6 hours at 900 C. Untreated (normalised) and boronised specimens were exposed under dynamic conditions to corrosion in an acidified NaCl-solution, to erosion in a hydrocarbon condensate from natural gas with suspended quartz sand, and to erosion corrosion in the mentioned NaCl-solution with suspended quartz sand. Following testing techniques were applied: gravimetry, cyclic polarisation, microhardness measurements, and structural analysis by optical micrography as well as by X-ray diffraciton. Considerable improvement of behaviour under corrosive and erosive-corrosive circumstances has been established for boronised specimens. At the same time, synergetic effect between erosion and corrosion has been observed on specimens of both types.
