SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION AS A MEASURE OF REDUCING HARMFUL DIESEL ENGINE EXHAUST COMPONENTS

The restriction of the permitted emissions of harmful components regulated legally represents a significant effort demanded from the producers in the technological, technical and financial sense. The stipulated limits of permitted emissions are so low that they require comprehensive and very complex measures which need to be done on the engines in order to satisfy these. In Diesel engines it is especially difficult to satisfy the latest regulations for the permitted emission of nitrogen oxide and particles. Since October 2006 the European standards on the permitted emissions of harmful components EURO 4 came into force, valid for all the new commercial vehicles of total allowed mass above 6t, and since 2009 the EURO 5 standards were introduced. The compliance with these standards requires measures which are undertaken inside and outside the engine. This work deals with one part of the measures which refer to subsequent treatment of exhaust gases, primarily the application of selective catalytic reduction (SCR). This is a measure which allows sufficient reduction of the emission nitrogen oxides and particles. This means analysis of the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the application of the catalytic means in order to achieve the desired reduction of harmful emissions, without the increase in the fuel consumption. The achieved results are compared with the stipulated limits which can be satisfied by these measures.
