Adventure Tourism in the Decelopment Concept of Tourism in Croatia
Tourism in Croatia is not giving the results that it should, considering the country’ s natural resource basis. Croatia needs to define a new development concept that will permanently transform its inert, stereotype, and unimaginative offering into an industry of entertainment, facilities and services, events, and active holidaymaking. In addition to fostering selective forms of tourism, and indigenous elements and events, this involves establishing an adventure tourism offering. Adventure tourism has the fastest growth rate on the European tourism market as a result of changes to demand trends. The concept of adventure has changed over time, and today it is linked to services and facilities that are not commonplace, visits to pristine regions, a wish to experience new things, partake in extreme sports, rise to challenges, feel the rush of adrenaline… The paper seeks to analyse the current situation of adventure tourism in Croatia, together with the strategic orientations of its development. Croatia stands out with regard to the natural preconditions required for developing adventure tourism, which can open up the possibility of valorising each of its Counties in terms of tourism. Unfortunately, the importance of adventure tourism has not yet been recognised, and its development is evolving only at a declarative level at the margins of tourism trends. Because a development concept for adventure tourism does not exist, its development is based on the individual activities of specialised tourist agencies (Adventure Dalmatia, Adriatic Tourism) and enthusiasts. Notwithstanding this, extreme sports (canyoning, paragliding, rafting, freeclimbing), activities (speleology, diving) and races (Bjelolasica, Crochallenge Adventure) are taking hold, thus signalling future expansion.
