Cultural sensitivity and competence in adolescent mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention: a European study

The objectives of the project, mentioned in the title, are to conduct a series of needs analyses from targeted immigrant youth and their family, and service providers and to develop and implement targeted educational, culturally appropriate information kit for youth and their parents to help families from immigrant/refugee backgrounds better understand and recognise mental health problems in adolescents and young people, as well as the benefits of prevention and early identification of health problems. Furthermore, we propose to implement flexible education and training programme on transcultural and migration issues in youth mental health to be delivered in workshop format, seminars or presentations to mental health service providers, social workers, school counselors and ethnic community members. The aim is to increase community knowledge about problems associated with adolescent mental health and cultural determinants of health outcomes as measured by the number of news stories/articles on the project. To reach these objectives the authors use the results of the project “ Health Problems, Mental Disorders and Cross-Cultural Aspects of Developing Effective Rehabilitation Procedures For Refugees of the War-Affected Countries” (5th Framework programme INCO: International Scientific Cooperation Projects, 1998-2002) that provided important empirical data on the most salient problems connected to psychosocial adjustment and experience of adolescent immigrants and refugees in six countries of resettlement. It has identified a range of specific risk and protective factors associated with various settings (family, school, community) and additional to those recognized as relevant to adolescents generally, which reveal a complex interaction between young people, their families, and their social, economic and cultural environments.
