The Role of Dalmatia in the Relations between Sigismund, the Neapolitan Angevins and the Venetian Republic
Depending on their point of view different historiographies (Italian, both that dealing with the Regno and that dealing with Venice ; Hungarian ; Croatian) valued rather differently the place and role of Dalmatia in political plans of King Sigismund and his main rival for the crown of Hungary, King Ladislas of Naples. Conversely, each historiography valued the agency of both claimants very differently, discussing their activity in certain regions (Italy, Dalmatia, Hungary) in great details, while frequently completely neglecting their activity in other regions. The picture provided in that way is rather distorted, while the evaluation of both kings varies from unconditional (sometimes even partisan) support and fascination to complete rejection and dismissal as incompetent and immoral persons. The paper presents the way how the activity of Ladislas and Sigismund and their partisans regarding Dalmatia in particular and the Kingdom of Hungary in general is presented in the aforementioned scholarship, as well as tries to point to main flaws of such descriptions. In the paper, an attempt on providing more comprehensive and accurate picture of these events is also briefly delineated.
