The Intraparticle Deactivation of Ni-SiO2-Al2O3 by Thiophene in Benzene Hydrogenation
The deactivation of commercial Ni-SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst was studied in an isothermal differential flow reactor using hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexane as a model reaction. Reaction system behaviour in both the presence and absence of diffusional limits is studied at temperatures ranging from 388 to 476 K and atmospheric pressure. The results indicate that higher mass transfer resistance increase the life time of the pellets, while lower mass transfer increase the effectiveness factor. The combined effects of these opposing factors results in an optimum value of the Thiele modulus for which the desired reaction rate is maximum for a given period of continuous operation.
