Design of mould gates in injection moulds for thermoplastics
The mould is the most important element of the thermoplastic injection moulding system, and therefore it has to be developed with due attention. Within the methodical and systemic approach to mould development, adequate solutions for its individual partial functions need to be defined. One of the partial functions of moulds is separating the thermoplastic melt into the mould cavities using gates. The gate represents the element of the mould feed system which connects the runners with the mould cavities. The type of the gate and its dimensions affect significantly the injection moulding parameters, as well as the performance of the finished moulding. Defining the type, number and position of the gates, as well as their design relied exclusively on the mould designers experience. However, the increasingly complex forms and higher demands regarding the moulding quality, require an engineering approach to this problem. Therefore, adequate guidelines for the selection of gate type are being developed, and the development of analytical and numerical methods is directed towards gate dimensioning. Computers and the appropriate software play a very important part in these processes.
