Improvement in the bulk cargo discharge technology with the introduction of new electronic components into a ship discharger
The discharger grab path should be said to be dominantly influenced by the ship design and discharge technology. On the other hand, the bunker position height on a ship discharger depends on the ship's size, and influences the grab path as well as its duty cycle. The interdependence of the ship discharger, ship's characteristics, discharge technology and discharge operation calls for a thorough analysis of a number of parameters exercising more or less influence in the duty cycle of a grab and in the total discharge efficiency. When the discharge of bulk cargo is concerned, a change in geometrical relations inevitably appears, causing eventually the dispersion of the cargo, due to the old-fashioned technical and technological characteristics of the ship discharger, bad position of the bunker and the crane operator's own estimate, and furtherly, in a long run, a fall in the depth of the sea along the wharf. With the introduction of new electronic components into a ship discharger, the reduced motion of the grab hoist rope is achieved, influencing thus the necessary accelerations and decelerations. Thus, the complete duty cycle of the grab is reduced, the discharge efficiency is increased and the dispersion of cargo that may happen between the ship and the ship discharger is prevented.
