Accuracy of suspended sediment measurements in natural streamflows
The paper deal with the problem of assessing the accuracy of suspended sediment measurements in open streamflows. The essentials of the gravitation and diffusion theory are presented in the introduction together with practical examples of measurements on the Drava River. Employing a Monte Carlo method and the theory of experimental design, the discharge of suspended sediment through a schematic cross-section of an open streamflow was simulated. The influence of the following five factors on the accuracy of suspended sediment measurement is examined: a) the number of verticals on which the suspended sediment measurement are carried out ; b) the number of points at which measurements are conducted ; c) the position of the points on the verticals ; d) the position of the vertical in the cross-sectional area ; e) the vertical distribution of suspended sediment concentration. Our analysis showed that in suspended sediment measurements in natural streamflows great attention should be paid to the selection of the number and position of the verticals. Recommendations of for optimizing measurements are given. The formula for determining the upper limit of absolute error in suspended sediment measurements is also defined. The influence of different measurement method on the annual budget suspended sediment is investigated.
