Mechanical and Structural Studies of Photo-degraded Polyurethane
Three series of polyurethane elastomers, PURs, were synthesised using poly(ethylenebutylene adipate) glycol, poly(caprolactone) glycol and poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol with 4, 4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and 1, 4-butandiol, as chain extender. The influence of the structure of the polyols on the dynamic-mechanical and thermal scanning behaviour of PUR after UV irradiation and their mutual dependence have been studied. Physical transitions, dynamic-mechanical properties, X-Ray diffraction, and irradiation effects have been investigated for a better understanding of the degradative process and of the role of hard (urethane) and soft (polyol) segments in PUR.
