Nodular thyroid disease : effect of age on the prevalence of thyroid nodules
The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of thyroid nodules according to the age among females. Ultrasonography of the thyroid gland was performed in 470 adult women (15-80 years of age) in Croatia, directed to the Thyroid Clinic, where in some area goiter is considered mild endemic. Thyroid abnormalities were found in 372 women. Two hundred and fifty five (54, 2 %) subjects had nodular changes and 117 (24, 8 %) had diffuse abnormalities of the thyroid. One hundred and twenty four (26, 3 %) subjects had solitary nodules and 131 (27, 8 %) had multiple nodules. Nodules were found in all age group, but after forty years of age they appeared in every second woman and increased in number, while after 70s almost every woman had predominantly multiple and large nodules.
