Correlation Between Mechanical and Chemical Properties of Polyuretathane Compounds Under Ageing Conditions

Polyuretathane adhesive compounds, which are multicomponent chemical compositions consisting of basic polyuretathane-forming reactants and necessary additives such as synthetic resins and mineral fillers, have been evaluated under accelerated aging conditions. The cooperative bonding, enhanced by crosslinking agents in unstablised and stablised systems, has been investigated. The complex nature of the polyurethane structure, especially its weak points which may be responsible for degradation processes, was found to be relevant when polyurethane adhesive compounds are subjected to the action of heat, moisture, atmospheric oxygen and UV-irradiation. In order to elucidate the relative importance of the various ingredients of polyurethane adhesive compounds in the degradative environment, their effect on the mechanical properties of the whole composite was established as well as the chemical changes which occurred during ageing.
