Science policy in Croatia

The Research and Development (R & D) and higher education sector in Croatia consists of: 26 public institutes, 13 private scientific institutions, 6 technology and research development centers, 11 research centers in industry, one military research center, 7 universities and 16 public colleges and polytechnics. The Ministry of Science, Education and Sports and the National Science Council monitor the development and quality of R & D sector. The main objectives of the National Science and Technology policy are: - Increasing investments into R & D in order to reach the 3 % of GDP as stated in the Lisbon Strategy set by the European Union Commission with goals to promote economic growth and job creation. - Restructuring Croatia's science system in order to reorient research towards national priorities. - Strengthening cooperation between science, government and industry in the creation of new knowledge and goods. - Increasing participation of Croatian scientists in the EU Framework Programmes. Research activities of the Ruđer Bošković Institute as a representative institution of Croatian science will be reviewed and Laboratory for Radiation Chemistry and Dosimetry as a successful example of combining basic and applied research will be presented.
