Dynamics of flexible multibody systems using a co-rotational approach

This paper presents general approach for modelling spatial multibody systems composed of rigid and flexible links which are modelled as slender bodies. Among several formulations which are used for analysis of multibody systems a finite element formulation based on co-rotational approach is adopted in this investigation. This formulation provides nonlinear framework which enables that finite element method can be used in analysis of large motion problems of multibody system. The decomposition of the element motion into rigid body and pure deformation part through the use of a local co-rotational frame which rotates and translates with the element, provides that deformation can be described in the local frame using well-known constitutive relations, while rigid body motion can be analyzed in the inertial frame, that simplifies the treatment of inertial effects. Also, traditional co-rotation formulation with some adaptations is very usable for application of bond graphs. This technique is used here to develop model of multibody system. Using bond graphs as powerful visual modelling language is provided by the BondSim application
