Activity of Na+, K+-ATPase in the antennal gland of European lobster Homarus gammarus
Na+, K+-ATPase activity was studied in the antennal gland of the commercially important European lobster Homarus gammarus acclimated to seawater (SW, salinity 38 ppt, 1140 mOsmol/l) and dilute seawater (DSW, salinity 20 ppt, 578 mOsmol/l). In SW acclimated lobsters haemolymph and urine osmolarities were isosmotic with ambient SW. In DSW acclimated lobsters the ratio of urine/haemolymph osmolarities was 0.79. In DSW the specific activity of Na+, K+-ATPase in antennal gland homogenates was significantly higher than in those of SW acclimated lobsters. A slightly lower chloride U/H ratio than 1 and increased Na+, K+-ATPase activity in the antennal gland from DSW suggest inwardly driven Cl--organic osmolytes transport by some mechanism which should be studied in the future.
