Shot-peened aluminum alloy surface under marine corrosion
This paper deals with the sea water influence on the shot-peened surface of 5083 aluminum alloy. In the first part of this paper a base description of the shot-peening treatment is given. This treatment introduces the compressive stress in the surface layer of the metal, changing the reducing tensile residual stresses. The second part of this paper deals in general with marine corrosion processes that attack the aluminum alloys. The 5083 Al-alloy specimens were subjected to the sea water activity for periods of two and six months. After this corrosion process the tensile strength and hardness were tasted. The microstructure of the specimen’ s surface layer was also controlled. The test results indicate that the sea water chemical impact on the shot- peened surface of 5083 Al-alloy is not significant, but fouling corrosion process might be important.
