Water management and environment in the Croatian islands
In Croatian aquatory, there are 718 islands and 467 rocks and reefs. Out of this, 67 islands are populated. Only 9 islands have the water resources of their own which may be used for water supply. The capacity of these sources ranges from 3 to 300 litres per second. Other islands are supplied from the mainland, and on a large number of islands water demands are covered by collecting of rainwater or by transporting water by tankers. In general, the status of water supply of the Croatian islands is unsatisfactory. In the program of development of the islands, one of the most important issues is providing of sufficient quantities of quality drinking water. Protection of water resources is essential, including both islands and mainland sources from which the islands are supplied. Therefore it is necessary to foresee required activities as well as to realize the level of financial means required to achieve the management of water resources
