Development of ship's automation up to now and expected improvements
The paper aims at presenting, by describing the ship’ s automation systems, improvements that may be expected in the near future. Four generations of shipboard automation are shown, including the characteristics and requirements that the automation of ship control and monitoring systems must meet in order to be classified under a particular generation. The area, within which there will be a further improvement in the operation and control system, which will be of utmost importance for the increase in the efficiency of the business operations and safety of the ship, is also presented. Fields of further enhancement are considered as these will be decisive in increasing the efficiency of the business operations and safety of the ship. In order to support such considerations, the current trends in the development of communications, its system, standard and equipment are also presented.
