Haematological changes produced in rats by ochratoxin A
Ochratoxin A is one of the most potent fungal toxins producing many adverse effects. In addition to being nephrotoxic, ochratoxin A also induced haematological changes in rat and mice given a high dosis of toxin. The present investigation was undertaken to explore some haematological factors in rats receiving very low oral dosis of ochratoxin A over a relatively short period of time. Fisher male rats (n=32) were given by gavage a daily 60 mikrograms/kg dose of ochratoxin A over 5, 10, 15 and 20 days. The effect of this low dosis of ochratoxin A on hemoglobin, total count or red blood cells, total count white blood cells and trombocyte count were studied. Ochratoxin A caused a significant decrease in the total count of trombocyte, after 15 days (40 % decrease in comparison to the control values) and after 20 days (45 % decrease in comparison to control values) of treatment. At the same time there was a significant increase in the total count of white blood cells (40 % and 32 % increase in comparison to the control values, respectively). These results might reflect the direct action of ochratoxin A on bone marrow of the animal, or the changes might be related to the other effects of mycotoxin.
