Entry: Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition 1975, Third Prize
The outstanding merit of the entry lies in the architectural treatment of the conceptual line between private and public. Within a space created on balanced grids, the conceptual line is treated as a mirror surface. This creates an illusion, as the contest entry says, of simultaneous penetration into the house and exclusion of the community. Since this is not a simple exterior wall, but is placed within a double grid, it probably would add a sense of depth because of the reflection of the posts and beams in the mirror. The simplicity of the grid composition emphasizes the conceptual line. General Remarks by Arata Isozaki
