The Communicative Approach to Poster Design Analysis
This research addresses poster design evaluation considerations in order to determine the series of questions analysis should ask in attempting to produce a comprehensive account of the different meanings carried by its image, text, layout and typography. Objective evaluation is critical for graphic product future success or failure, so graphic design analysis approach must be tailored to address individual graphic product: its function and its purpose. Poster belongs to outdoor media of mass communication, its function is to catch people’ s attention from the distance and convey the message through a combination of word and images. Poster’ s purpose is to present and promote some idea, institution, event, etc... To fulfill its function and purpose, poster’ s message should interact with the audience and produce meanings in terms of their cultural beliefs and values. Both analysis (function and purpose) of design should be interrelated and investigate the design as a collective body of work rather than as an assortment of unrelated parts. If the message of the design is reinforced trough visual form that is consistently applied with decisive reason and aesthetic skill, the poster has fulfilled its role.
