Vera Gamulin (1948-2006)
The sudden death of Vera Gamulin on October 12 came as a shock to the whole molecular biology community in Croatia and in particular to her close colleagues and friends at the Ruđer Bošković Institute. Vera was unquestionably a dominant figure in molecular biology research in Croatia over the last 25 years. She was the first to realize the importance of recombinant DNA technology during the late seventies and her ambition as well as curiosity and passion led her to Yale University and Dieter Söll's group where she worked as a post-doc characterizing tRNA genes and studying tRNA aminoacylation in the early eighties. The rest of her scientific career was marked by this work and she retained an interest in studying DNA sequences and their evolutionary conservation throughout her career.
