Annuario Pontificio as a multilingual toponymy source
Annuario Pontificio can be analyzed as multilingual toponomastic dictionary. There are published different kinds of toponyms of bishop sees: in actual local language, in Latin (as “ nomina de Curia” ), and in some ancient form (for titular sees). Confronting those toponyms in SE Europe, one can analyze linguistic, socio anthropologic, and/or other cultural influences and interactions, caused by ethnic migrations, by prevarications (political, economic, cultural), implemented by settlers, immigrants, invaders, or simply visitors (using “ lingua franca” , for instance). The same language can perform different roles through different periods. Through 2000 years Latin in the SE Europe was respectively the language of invaders, settlers, inhabitants, the base for neoromance languages, substrate, and even lingua franca (in Church, sciences, literature… ).
