Interaction of Eurocode 8 and Eurocode 3 in eccentrically braced steel frame design
The capability of parts of a steel structure to resist earthquake actions out of their elastic range is provided in Eurocode 8/1 by introducing eccentrically braced steel frames (ESF). Rules given for EBF design in Eurocode 8/1 have intention to insure that yielding in a link should take place prior to any yielding elsewhere. To insure this principle some provisions given in Eurocode 3/1 must also be fulfilled. In this paper optimal link length of an EBF is discussed as well as the interaction of bending, shear and axial forces in a link, bringing together provisions given in both Eurocode 8/1 and Eurocode 3/1.
