Status epilepticus: epidemiologic-clinical analysis
Status epilepticus (SE) is one of the worst complications of epilepsy. It is an urgent medical state in which a patient is in vital danger. In the period from 1978 to 1989 at the Department of Neurology of the Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka 885 patients with epileptic manifestations were examined, what was 7% of the total number of hospitalized patients. SE was registered in 26 patients, 14 male and 12 female. The men were most frequently aged 50-59 years and women 30-39 years. Most of them (92%) have been epileptic patients for many years, while in 8% of them it was the first sign of epilepsy. Primary generalized epilepsy (with grand mal attacks, absences or their combination) was predominant (65%) , parital attacks with complex symptomatology were found in 23% of the patients, and partial attacks with secondary generalization in only 12% of the patients. SE was mostly the result of non-compliance to antiepileptics. Duration of SE was in 14 patients up to 12 hours, and in 12 patients 2-5 days. The treatment has been carried out successfully in 81% of our cases of SE, but in 19% of them the therapeutic effect was not satisfactory.
