Bacterial Antigens Activate Granulocytes in Chronic Maxillary Sinusitis in the Asthmatics
The aim of the study was to compare markers of activation of eosinophils and neutrophils in the serum and maxillary sinus fluid of asthmatic patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis in respect of bacterial isolates from the sinuses. The obtained results suggest that bacterial presence in the chronically inflamed sinuses have impact on local neutrophil activation in the asthmatic patients, while such impact was not found to be significantly upregulated in the sinuses with bacterial growth, both in asthmatics and non-asthmatics. However, increased serum ECP levels in the asthmatics where pathogens were isolated from the sinus samples, may suggest that some bacterial antigens in CRS, as a part of united airway disease, may have impact on asthma severity.
