Tansfer of 40K, 137Cs and selected elements from soil into various honey types

Transfer of 137Cs, 40K, Ca, Fe, Rb, Sr, Cu, Zn, Pb from soil into dominantly nectar honey (meadow) honey, mixed honey (meadow and honey-dew honey) and honey-dew honey was studied. Activities of radionuclides (137Cs, 40K) are measured by gamma-spectrometric method, while macroelement (Ca, Fe) and microelement (Rb, Sr, Cu, Zn, Pb) concentrations are measured by XRF method in soils and various honey types collected in area of Gorski Kotar, Croatia. Transfer factor (Tf) of any element from soil into honey is defined as ratio between element concentration in honey and in soil multiplied by 100 (expressed as percentage). The lowest Tf were found in case of nectar honey, the highest in honey-dew honey. The highest Tf was found in the case of 40K, 6.89 ? 3.86 in nectar honey and 21.1 ą 6.22 in honey-dew honey. Very low caesium Tf into nectar honey (0.249 ą 0.208) increases in the case of honey-dew honey for more than thirty times (8.51 ą 4.75). Similar behaviour shows rubidium. Copper and lead transfer factors into honey-dew honey are relatively high too. Iron, as soil macroelement, shows low Tf (0.035 ą 0.017 in honey-dew honey) as well as microelement strontium (0.037 ą 0.020). In distinction to Fe, calcium has high Tf (2.47 ą 1.20 into honey-dew honey). It seems that honey-dew honey could be one of the best random samples, that better characterises element concentrations at broader area than any other “point” sample.
