Socijalni status umjetnika u 19. st. na primjeru djelovanja Ivana Padovca
Gorana Doliner Social Status of 19th-Century Artists. A Case Study: Ivan Padovec Ivan Padovec, « a guitar virtuoso and a composer» (as called by the Croatian musicologist Franjo Kuhač), did not reach the position and the international fame of a high-ranked musician – as, for example, his contemporary Johann Strauss – , as some biographical presentations (like the Kuhač's one) could suggest. In comparing their biographies, some parallels can be noticed, especially in some existential problems, but one of the important differencies is that Strauss – to the contrary of Padovec – was a member of a « great nation» , what probably helped him in his career. The introspection in Padovec's biography and his works offers a series of data, relevant for the investigation of the social status of an artist – composer, teacher and virtuoso – during the mid-19th century. Padovec could survive and live quite successfully on the basis of his work as a « free artist» on a level equal to the members of the bourgeois society in Varaždin and Zagreb (and similar to his coleagues in Central Europe). His place and role within the society are investigated in regarding his psychological profile, financial status, social activity and artistic outreach.
