AN ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACT OF WAR ON THE ATTENDANCE RATE OF MUSEUMS IN THE ISTRIA REGION (CROATIA)

In Croatia there are numerous museums of various profiles, especially in the capital city of Zagreb, and in the developed tourist regions along the coast. An econometric analysis will show whether the war impacted significantly on the attendance rate of museums in the Istria region, located in the northwest part of the country. This region has always had the highest level of tourist traffic in all of Croatia – before the war, during the war and after the war. Another reason for conducting research in this region lays in the fact that, during the war, this was the only region visited by tourists to a considerable extent, due to the vicinty of EU countries. Establishing the impact of war on attendance rates will be based on the comparative econometric analysis of attendance rates from 1985 to 2000. The basis for analysis will be the comparison between the number of visitors to museums in the Istria region and the number of tourists in this period. A detailed analysis will be conducted in two locations which house the most important museums in the Istria region. These are Pula, the largest town and the main administrative center of the region, and Porec, the most propulsive tourist town in the Istria region. In Pula, there is the most important museum in the Istria region connected to the best known archeological site in the region: the well preserved Roman Arena. Subject to available data, the analysis will be broadened to include the various types of museums visitors and tourists. As required, the analysis will involve data for the period 2001 – 2003.
